Public Safety
Our role in the community-wide shared responsibility for safety on campus is to provide professional law enforcement, effective emergency response, crime and incident reduction and community outreach and education.
As individuals and as an organization the men and women of the public safety group hold the following values as central to out personal and professional behavior:

Chief of Police
Kirk Bouyelas
Kirk is a 31-year veteran of the New Orleans Police Department and previously served as chief of investigations for the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office. During his long tenure at NOPD, he received numerous honors and awards for his outstanding service and accomplishments and has a stellar reputation in the local law enforcement community.
At NOPD, Kirk served as both deputy chief of the Investigations and Support Bureau and deputy chief of the Operations Bureau. Prior to his promotion to deputy chief, Kirk served as commander of the Second Police District, becoming well acquainted with the Tulane community, which falls within that jurisdiction. For the last four years, Kirk has served as the chief of investigations for the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office, where he directs and manages those who conduct follow-up investigations and assist the district attorney in preparing cases for prosecution.
In addition to his extensive work experience, Kirk has served as chairman and member of the Gulf Coast High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Executive Board; a member of the Joint Terrorism Task Force Executive Board; a member of the New Orleans Witness Protection and Security Board and a Certified Homicide Investigator through the Louisiana Police Officer Standards and Training Council. He has also participated in numerous panel discussions and peer exchanges with organizations such as the Police Executive Research Forum, International Association of Chiefs of Police, Bureau of Justice Assistance and the VERA Institute of Justice.
He has a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice administration from Bellevue University and also serves as an adjunct instructor for the New Orleans Police Academy, teaching criminal investigations, report writing and newly promoted supervisors.
